Aardvarks: Zambia's Nighttime Foragers
Aardvarks, prominently featured on Zambia's stamps and coinage, are fascinating creatures found throughout the country.
With their spade-shaped feet, they are adept at digging into ant and termite mounds. Using their sticky, wormlike tongues, which can extend up to 30.5 cm, aardvarks can consume up to 50,000 ants in a single night.
These nocturnal foragers cover a wide range, typically moving over 20-30 km each night in search of food. Their remarkable feeding habits and extensive range make aardvarks an integral part of Zambia’s wildlife, contributing to the balance of the ecosystem by controlling insect populations.
The depiction of aardvarks on Zambia’s stamps and coins celebrates their unique role and presence in the nation's natural heritage.
