Legacy of Zambezi Redwood

Zambezi Redwood, once Zambia's primary timber export, played a pivotal role in the country’s forestry industry. In its heyday, the main products derived from this timber included railway sleepers, mining timber, and parquet flooring.

The peak of Zambezi Redwood production occurred in the 1930s and again in 1964, reaching an impressive 4,000 cubic meters per year. During the 1980s, sales values for Zambezi Redwood topped US$1 million annually, underscoring its significant economic contribution.

The prominence of Zambezi Redwood in the timber market highlights its importance in both industrial applications and the Zambian economy.

Its historical peak production and high sales values reflect a period of robust timber trade and the key role Zambezi Redwood played in Zambia's export sector.
