Zambian History Through Postage Stamps
Birth of Northern Rhodesia
The creation of Northern Rhodesia began on 29 October 1889, with the granting of a charter to Cecil Rhodes. This historic
event marked the beginning of British rule over the territory. Over the decades, the region was governed under the reign of six English monarchs.
Queen Victoria (1837–1901) was the first to oversee the territory, followed by Edward VII (1901–10), George V (1910–36), Edward VIII (1936), George VI (1936–52), and finally, Elizabeth II (1952–2022).
Their reigns spanned a significant period, shaping the region's history and development. The era of British rule continued until 24 October 1964, when Northern Rhodesia gained independence and was renamed Zambia.
The transition from colonial governance to sovereignty marked a pivotal moment in the region's history, reflecting the broader shifts in political and social dynamics across Africa.
