The Nalikwanda Paddlers

Over 180 strong Lozi men participate in the historic and visually striking ritual of paddling the Litunga's Nalikwanda Barge from Lealui to Lumulunga.

Each paddler dons a distinctive scarlet beret adorned with a piece of lion's mane and a traditional skirt made of animal skins, symbolizing their status and the sacred nature of the journey.

The barge procession is a display of strength, coordination, and cultural pride. A unique aspect of this tradition is the strict rule that if a paddler's stick accidentally strikes another's paddle or the barge itself, he faces the penalty of being thrown overboard. This rigorous discipline underscores the importance of precision and unity in the ceremony.

The Nalikwanda Barge procession is not only a significant cultural event for the Lozi people but also a vivid demonstration of their heritage and communal spirit, blending tradition with ceremonial rigor.
