Makishi Masquerade Legacy

Originally proclaimed in 2005, the Makishi Masquerade is a vibrant cultural tradition of the Luvale, Chokwe, Luchazi, and Mbunda peoples. It was inscribed in 2008 on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, highlighting its profound significance.

This ceremonial performance features elaborate masks and costumes, embodying ancestral spirits and deities. The masquerade serves as a vital means of preserving and transmitting traditional knowledge, values, and social norms across generations.
