Post Runners: The Backbone of Early Mail Delivery in Zambia

Post runners were essential to the early mail delivery system in Zambia, ensuring communication across vast distances. By 1908, nearly 150 post runners were employed by the North Western Rhodesia Postal Authority.

These dedicated individuals were tasked with covering about twenty miles a day while carrying up to forty pounds of mail.

Their journeys were arduous, often taking around fifteen days to cover distances as long as 310 miles. Despite the challenging conditions, post runners played a crucial role in maintaining connections between various parts of the country, demonstrating remarkable endurance and dedication.

The history of these post runners highlights the foundational efforts in building Zambia's postal system, celebrating their contributions to the nation’s communication infrastructure.
