Nakambala Sugar Estate: A Pillar of Zambia's Agricultural Policy

Established in 1964 by Tate & Lyle Ltd, the Nakambala Sugar Estate quickly became a central element of Zambia's agricultural policy. The estate was instrumental in advancing the country’s agricultural sector and supporting economic development.

In 1972, the estate and its operations were nationalized, marking a significant shift in its management and ownership. The Zambia Sugar Company Ltd, which operated the estate, was part of this transition.

In 1995, the estate underwent privatization, and its ownership was transferred to new private investors, leading to the formation of Zambia Sugar Plc.

Today, Zambia Sugar Plc plays a critical role in the national economy, contributing 92.5% of the country’s total sugar production.

The estate remains a cornerstone of Zambia’s sugar industry, reflecting the lasting impact of its historical and economic significance in the country’s agricultural landscape.
