The Great Bat Migration: A Natural Spectacle in Kasanka National Park

Every year from October to December, approximately 8 million fruit bats embark on the largest mammal migration on Earth, traveling from the Democratic Republic of Congo to Zambia's Kasanka National Park.

This incredible journey is not only a breathtaking natural spectacle but also an essential ecological event. The bats migrate to feed on and pollinate wild fruits, playing a crucial role in seed dispersal.

During their stay in Kasanka, these bats can disperse seeds over more than 75 kilometers in a single night—three times further than the distance covered by an elephant.

This extensive seed dispersal aids in the regeneration of forests and the maintenance of biodiversity within the region.

The migration of these fruit bats is a vital part of the ecosystem, contributing to the health and sustainability of Zambia's natural landscapes.
