Soya Beans in Zambia
Soya beans, indigenous to China and one of the five oldest crops cultivated before 2500 BC, were introduced to Zambia in the 1930s. This ancient legume has a long history of agricultural significance and was brought to Zambia as part of efforts to diversify local farming practices.
In 1991, a collaborative project by the Rotary Club and the United Church of Zambia played a pivotal role in creating awareness about the numerous benefits of soya beans. This initiative helped to highlight their nutritional value, economic potential, and agricultural advantages.
Thanks to these efforts and subsequent developments, Zambia has achieved self-sufficiency in soya production. Today, soya beans are a vital crop in Zambia, contributing to both local food security and economic stability.
The success of this crop reflects the positive impact of targeted agricultural projects and the adaptability of traditional crops to new environments.
